Downtown Antwerp has preserved the memories of its Medieval and Renaissance prosperity despite World War II damages and destruction, including its beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady, elaborate guild houses and fantastic paintings by Rubens. In 1993, when all this beauty was crowned as the EU’s European Capital of Culture, even the previously neglected areas were restored into intimate entertainment districts. The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe, behind Rotterdam, and today the city is the centre of world diamond trade.
